About Sevastopol
Sevastopol which was founded in 1783 as a base for the Black See Fleet of Russia, long ago has grown from the frames of the military and marine base and became one of the largest towns of Ukraine, a sea port, cultural, historical, recreational and tourist center.
The most popularity in Sevastopol belongs to such architectural and historical memorials as:
Sevastopol Defence in 1854-1855 - world-wide known monument of the 349-day heroic defence of Sevastopol. It was opened on May 14, 1905. Panorama author - F.A. Rubo, professor of battle-painting class, member of Petersburg Academy of Art. Incide the panorama there is a picturesque canvas with area of 1610 square meters and a detailed plan with the area of 900 square meters, made on a special rostrum.
One of the mostly known memorials of Sevastopol - Monument to Sunk Ships. It is the symbol of the Hero Town Sevastopol.
Khersonesus Tauric Historical and Archeaological Reserve is world-wide known. Khersonesus was a Greek colony founded in 422-421 BC by originates of Gerakleya of Pont. All the years of its existance Khersonesus had to participate in wars. In 1827 the Black Sea Fleet officer named Kruze made first excavations on the place of burried Khersonesus and since that time Khersonesus Historical and Archeaological Reserve is one of the major scientific and research centers of archaeology.
The coast around Sevastopol is abound in picturesque and convenient places for holiday-makers. Kazak and Blue Bights are excellent places for quiet and calm recreation at the sea. They are situated near Khersones Cape - the utmost south and eastern point of Sevastopol. Only here you can be in turn in the Western and Southern Shores of Crimea.
